The Three Financial Statements, Simply: Income, Balance Sheet & Cash Flow
A simple explanation of the core financial statements: what each one tells you, how to read them as an owner, and why you need them ready at any moment.
Financial statements are the language your business uses to describe itself: to the bank when you seek financing, to the tax authority during an audit, and to you at every decision. Three statements are enough to see the whole picture.
1. The income statement: are you profitable?
It answers the most important question: what remains of your revenue after costs and expenses over a period? Start with revenue, subtract cost of sales to get gross profit, then operating expenses to reach net profit. A business that sells a lot and still loses money — the income statement catches it before your bank account does.
2. The balance sheet: what do you own and owe?
A snapshot of your assets (cash, inventory, receivables, fixed assets) against your liabilities (suppliers, loans, accruals) and equity. It's where banks and investors read your financial strength.
3. The cash flow statement: where did the cash go?
Paper profit doesn't pay salaries — cash does. This statement tracks cash in and out across operations, investing and financing, and reveals a coming liquidity crunch early, even in a profitable business. Track it with Mawrid's cash management.
Reading them together
- Good profit + shrinking cash = profits stuck in receivables or inventory — review collections.
- Growing revenue + eroding gross margin = pricing or costs need review.
- Short-term liabilities larger than current assets = an early liquidity warning.
From books to statements — automatically
Traditionally you wait for an accountant to prepare statements at period end. In a cloud accounting system, every entry updates the statements the moment it posts: open financial reports and find the income statement, balance sheet and cash flow updated as of now — or ask the smart dashboard by voice: "what's my net profit this month?" and get the number.
